With the Magic of Light and Shadow: Bringing Shadow Figures to Life
Workshop

Technique: Inventing and creating shadow figures, playing with light and shadow through light projections, and presenting through shadow figures. In shadow theater, many physical laws are suspended—something small can, for example, appear very large. Shadow theater has existed since around 121 B.C. in China, and this art form has been preserved in many parts of the world, including parts of Asia, Europe, and North Africa. In this form of theater, two-dimensional figures are moved behind an illuminated screen using rods. Through light projections, the shadows of the figures are brought to life through movement and variations in size and shape. We will playfully explore this fascination and delve into the magic of light and shadow—whether by creating heroines, warriors, gatherers, animals, trees, and much more.
Age: The workshop is recommended for children aged 6-12 and can be adapted to each age group through age-appropriate methods.
Scope: minimum of 6 lessons or 4.5 hours, maximum of one week
Prerequisites: No prior knowledge is required.
